Vancouver's Wedding Videographer & Photographer

VanWeddings began its existence as a Vancouver wedding videographer in 2011. Before that time, wedding videos used to be captured by clunky camcorders. They were recorded more as a utility product, without much artistic flair. Wedding videos were boring and very few couples watched their video more than once. A lot of weddings happened with just a wedding photographer, and who could blame the bride for making that decision?

The same was about to happen with a friend of ours, she was going to get married and had no plans for a wedding video. Thankfully, just the year before, Canon had added a video mode to their DSLR camera. Originally intended as a quick way for photojournalists to take a quick video, it soon revolutionized film making. The large sensor size of the DSLR camera allowed for a very cinematic look to videography, and by 2011 this new breed of wedding films was all the rage! It was at this time we took our video DSLR to our friend’s small wedding and made a highlight wedding video for her as a gift.

No one expected anything like that, the bride LOVED it! Just like now, we didn’t do anything half-hearted. So even for this free project we used a steadycam, a mechanical camera stabilizer that took a lot of training to balance and use properly. We did a lot of reading and practicing in the park – Jen was not always amused!

With that first wedding video though, we realized we had a hidden talent and passion for filmmaking. And it wasn’t just shooting the footage well, it was all in the editing too. We took a lot of time to edit that first wedding, and still take probably too much time editing each wedding video. Being perfectionists, it’s hard to let a project go unless we had done everything possible. In late 2011 we attended our first wedding show, VanWeddings had officially become a Vancouver wedding videographer!

Ever since that humble beginning, VanWeddings has been fortunate to work with hundreds of couples, both in Vancouver, BC, and around the world in dozens of destination weddings! Since it became much more common to have both wedding photographers and wedding videographers together, a natural progression was to synergize and have both services under one roof. Sure, some of the cameras could do both photo and video, but it would be a disaster to simply flip the switch and have a person try to do both, so VanWeddings started developing two separate shooting teams, each with their own specialization, dedicated equipment, and working method.

At the same time, it was awesome to have two close-knit teams working together toward the common goal of producing the best images for the couple. The photographer is not trying to get their own shot while blocking the videographer, and the second videographer can help the photographers with a reflector or video light. Our teams love working with each other so much, we even offer a 10% (up to $1000) discount for booking both services together!
